Sweet Pasta
Sweet pasta? Yes, that’s right! It is an old Serbian tradition, a recipe called “Slatki Rezanci”. This is specifically served on Christmas Eve, when everyone fasts – don’t eat any food that might have any animal origin. The only food that we eat that is even close to meat is fish. This is a very old tradition and things haven’t changed since, well, the beginning of time, probably.
Besides fish, we also prepare “Česnica”, a specific type of bread prepared for Christmas. There is also “Prebranac”, a type of a dish made with beans and onion. During this feast, some other traditional food might be served – dried and fresh fruit, walnuts, honey, wine, as well as pickled salad called “Turšija”
But how about that sweet pasta? First of all, it has nothing to do with Italian pasta, so no offense intended (I know that it is not easy for Italians to hear that sweet pasta even exists). The pasta used for this dessert is called “Rezanci” and it is, otherwise, used for soups. Just as the rest of the dishes served for Christmas Eve in Serbia are ancient, so is the sweet pasta.
Here is how to make “Slatki Rezanci”, and I will use this opportunity to teach some Serbian 🙂
